Well, one couldn't expect 16Mbit EDO to continue selling under the variable cost of many producers. The situation which occurred a few weeks ago was not sustainable in the short run simply because the least efficient producers would (and might) have stopped producing.

Also remember that as the price continued to drop, even the $799 machines were announced with 32 megs so there will be a sizeable jump in demand. I think that the price of SDram did not jump by so much, so it is possible that some more production was switched over to SDRam as has been happening.

I think the best explanation is that just like in other markets, when the price drops too far too fast, there is going to be a rebound as it searches for balance. Longer term it's hard to believe that memory is a good business to be in because lately cheaper computers are more highly valued than more memory, and the ongoing transition to 64Mbit will make sure the capacity is there.
