Far more people viewed Obama's first SOTU than Trump's The notoriously ratings-focused President’s first State of the Union had 2 million fewer TVs tuned in than his joint address to Congress in February 2017. Trump’s first State of the Union address also came in lower than Bill Clinton’s first State of the Union, when 45.8 million viewers tuned in, according to Nielsen. Fox News wasn’t on the air when Clinton made the 1994 speech.
