Culver City, CA,--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 12, 1998--Syncronys Softcorp SYCR , a leading developer of utility software, today announced that it has signed an agreement to distribute a Japanese language version of BigDisk in Japan with Tokyo-based WinningRun. The agreement is one significant component of the Company's strategy to generate incremental revenues this year through new foreign, corporate and OEM sales channels.
Retail distribution is scheduled to begin in February as Japanese language localization has now been completed; other products are slated to go into Japanese distribution following BigDisk. In Japan, as well as several other foreign markets in which the Company is currently in contract negotiations, distribution will be achieved through an advantageous republishing model in which Syncronys is paid a fixed wholesale price per unit up front, and the republisher manages and pays for all its local marketing, distribution and tech support expenses.
Takeyuki Watanabe, WinningRun chief executive officer, said, "WinningRun has produced a number of PC software hits in Japan and we are extremely selective in the software programs we choose to republish. We have high expectations for BigDisk and are scheduling an aggressive marketing and public relations campaign in Japan in the weeks ahead that will include an extensive BigDisk media tour of leading PC trade and technology editors.
"With Syncronys' solid array of leading-edge PC utilities combined with WinningRun's deep distribution and expertise," Mr. Watanabe said, "I believe we have a winning combination with which to quickly capture market share."
Joe Cheng, who joined Syncronys from Quarterdeck Corporation last month as Vice President - OEM & Asian Sales and Marketing, commented, "Japan represents the second largest software market in the world, and WinningRun has an outstanding track record of producing excellent results in the lucrative Japanese market. We are delighted to join forces with WinningRun and see this as just the first step in building a strong Syncronys presence in Asia.
"Outside of North America, the Syncronys website receives its greatest concentration of BigDisk trial version downloads from Japan, boding well for this product launch," Cheng added. "Syncronys expects to launch a Japanese language mirror version of a portion of our website to include other new and existing products."
BigDisk is Syncronys' revolutionary new disk utility for Windows 95 that allows the PC to read all its hard drives as one big drive. BigDisk eliminates the need to transfer programs from one hard drive to another thus allowing users to increase the virtual capacity of their C: drives by borrowing space from other hard disks or removable drives installed in their PCs so that all hard drives function as one big drive.
