I don't know if we were ever 1 in life expectancy. I do know that's a meaningless statistic. Different countries determine it differently.

In addition, I know that Americans of East Asian ancestry have slightly higher life expectancies than East Asians in Asia. Americans from Minnesota and the Dakotas have higher life expectancies than Scandinavian countries despite similar demographics. White middle Americans have higher expectancies than Germans and British. The same applies for Mexican-Americans vs Mexicans in Mexico. Black Americans vs Africa.

Mormon males in Utah have a 10% higher life expectancy than non-Mormons in Utah. Lifestyle has a big imp;act as you can see.
