As an example, I recently learned that one can not fully escape the grid, at least in some areas. Where I live, one can turn off their power, but must continue to pay an access fee that is required under the law. In other words, once you put a property on the grid, you have to continue to pay for the privilege even if you no longer require the use of it. Here is a classic example of how social engineering permits/encourages inefficiencies by mandates.

The answer is to do away with utilities as we have known them, but that will require a power that is beyond that of voters for years to come IMO.
