Good Afternoon Sonny: Re: Investment picks for 1998 and beyond.

As I was saying to you a few days ago, I was looking for a strong rally to develop mid January somewhat like what happened in 1996 but not necessarily as strong - just a rally, then if the right team wins maybe a lot stronger finish!

Even though the market got whacked after the initial late Dec - Jan rally, a number of stocks have been acting well, most notably INTC, MSFT and CSCO. With these three 21st Century Bellweathers coming back so strong and to a certain extent the boxmakers, I believe the overall market is gaining confidence.

Even though we had a distorted January effect this year, the positive influences are still evident because portfolio managers have to BUY when they see these sharp breaks. Also the sentiment went negative very quickly and was overwhelmingly bearish so this helped.

Interestingly, there is a credible argument that the December washout in the Naz did create an important bottom and the correction of the last few days was in fact a retest and in general the Naz leaders have acted better on a relative strength basis than the rest of the market in recent days.

The biggest surprise in the market of course, would be a rally of the magnitude of Jan 96. There is already evidence that a number of issues may have made important bottoms today.

Asia is already diverging with some sectors already put in at least temporary lows, which suggests the likelyhood of an enormous snap back rally developing over the next few days.

All this volatiliy is creating a lot of opportunity. Remember what I said about Mexico in 95, a few weeks back when Korea was making its lows, look how much Korea has rallied since then. Already, there is talk that Korea is starting to rebound.

I am having a lot of trouble posting this message... more to come later
