Which sort of blows big holes in the argument that those who would commit mass murder and or suicide would just find other means.

"Blows big holes" is rather a stretch. It's not like we have enough anecdotes to claim data. I would call Australia encouraging.

It's theoretically possible that the frustrated potential shooters would take up needlepoint or curling instead. OTOH, us having plugged one avenue of destruction, they might opt for another. Poisoning is about due for a revival. And IED's are an attractive and less personally risky option. I wouldn't be so sanguine about ending the problem.
