The cholesterol test measures cholesterol bound to the layers of the skin. A skin test, if successful at clinicals, would eliminate the pain of a fingerprick and the variability (i.e. day to day or diet related) associated with blood cholesterol testing. The clinical study is to determine the correlation between skin cholesterol and the components of blood cholesterol (total cholesterol, VLDL, LDL, and HDL fractions) and the correlation directly between skin chol. and heart disease.

Yes they would apply for a CLIA waiver assuming the clinicals went well and they received FDA approval. In some ways its not disimilar to Chemtrak or Cholestech. The ultimate use for the cholesterol test could be in a physicians office or over-the-counter sales at a pharmacy, or large scale screening programs.
