But the USA backs the wrong people often such as Osama vs Gorby. At least Trump doesn't bow to Saudis and sing praise for jihad though he is gung ho for Sunni carnage in general
Maurice, check out what the Saudis have been doing in terms of their internal reforms and also what they've done with the GCC.

As far as I can tell, Trump's ME policy is as hands off as he can make it, given the situation he inherited. My interpretation is something like this:

The US will support any country that is being modern or attempting to be modern but won't interfere in their internal affairs as they achieve modernity.

That is, the US will "help" any country making the attempt but only if they ask for it, but that they should bear in mind US interests are paramount in determining US action.

This is the essence of the speech he gave in ME last spring and he seems to be sticking to it. It was extremely well received.

I think he could have achieved even more if not for the Democratic party's "muh Russia" campaign.

You should look really carefully at how ISIS was defeated in Iraq so quickly. US didn't/don't have the manpower there to do it themselves.

Note the two ME countries with imperial ambitions have governments that are dedicated to unmodernity. There will be no more Ottoman and Persian tax farms and satrapies.
