ESI Announces Order in Excess of $2 Million From Toshiba for
Memory Yield Improvement Systems

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESIO) announced today a multi-unit order of ESI Model 9300 Memory Yield Improvement Systems for Toshiba's fabrication facility in Yokkaichi, Japan.

Toshiba is focusing on factors such as process window and throughput to remain cost-effective and competitive. The 1.3 micron laser and larger process window of the Model 9300 allows Toshiba to use higher levels of energy to remove larger amounts of conducting material more efficiently, with less damage to the device. The result is increased repair yields with higher throughput.

ESI's Model 9300 Memory Yield Improvement System offers new standards for throughput, yield and uptime performance. The Model 9300 is an enabling technology for the next generation of memory fabrication. The system features a patented application of laser system technology that operates at a wavelength of 1.3 microns. This system offers memory manufacturers a much wider process window and higher repair yields than systems using conventional 1.0 micron laser technology.

Tom Richardson, General Manager of ESI's Semiconductor Products Division, said, "We won this order after a thorough review by Toshiba of our products as well as our competitors. Our 1.3 micron technology, with its wider process window, was the deciding factor. We look forward to a continued productive relationship with Toshiba."
