ESI Names Tompkins to Board of Directors

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- David F. Bolender, Chairman of the Board of Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESIO) announced the election of Jon D. Tompkins to the company's Board of Directors. Tompkins, a key figure in the semiconductor capital equipment industry, is currently Chief Executive Officer of KLA-Tencor. This appointment brings the ESI Board to eight members.

"Jon brings a wealth of industry experience to our Board," said Bolender. "He has a unique understanding of the dynamic markets that we serve and experience in many of the core technologies in ESI products."

Mr. Tompkins, 57, was appointed CEO and a member of the board of directors of KLA-Tencor on May 1, 1997, the effective date of the merger between Tencor Instruments and KLA Instruments. Prior to the merger, he served as chairman, president and CEO of Tencor. Before he joined Tencor Instruments in 1991, Mr. Tompkins served as president and CEO of Spectra Physics, a leader in the commercial laser market. Tompkins holds a BSEE from the University of Washington and an MBA from Stanford University. He serves as an Advisory Director to Varian Associates and is a director of SEMI/SEMATECH and the Community Foundation of Santa Clara County.
