Or the discussions in The Federalist Papers. They don't talk about defense against our own government going tyrannical. It does express concern over some foreign power invading and imposing a tyrannical government. Which was a realistic fear at the time. Being able to field militias composed of citizen-soldiers seemed reasonable.
