That is exactly what I have in mind. It is yet another example of the totemization of guns. That the very idea of examining the role of guns in anything is totally off limits. That, if anything, we must make rights central to the way we organize our public lives and accommodate the wishes of gun owners to the exclusion of all else. At this rate, we are going to recognize the fact that gun owners are a declining percentage of the population as a "crisis" and mobilize the country to address. I hope that is an exaggeration, but we certainly are trending that way...

I mean, the declining use of coal for economic reasons has been identified as a "crisis" that we have to address by throwing out regulations that control the dangers to people and the environment. That it is worth accepting the higher mortality rate and long term ecological damage that it can inflict to coddle the industry. So it isn't far-fetched to consider that a similar thing might be done with respect to guns.
