2. If the worst happens, instead of standing in front of 20 kids to "protect" them from the shooter, the moment he walks in the door you can be shooting at him. And he knows that. He knows any door he walks in could encounter armed defense.

Suboptimization, big time. The school shooter, who seems to typically be someone who knows the school, might well know which classrooms present resistance and which don't. As long as the teacher with the weapon stays in his classroom, that might work for them. Let some other teacher and kids die.

Rhetorically, I wonder whether you ever owned a handgun for self-protection.

No, I cannot imagine that. One takes steps to avoid risk. I bought a condo accessible only through the front door, which was securable and secured and lived there for forty years. Now I live in a gated community. I do know how to use a handgun, at least I did once. I had bought it as a gift for my husband to practice as he had trouble with annually qualifying in gun proficiency. I was a much better marksman from the jump. I'm ashamed to say that I once succumbed to practice on sharks even though it felt wrong. It was sad to see the little hole in the shark as it swam away. It has always been my habit to collect centipedes and spiders in my home and carefully place them outdoors. I'm not certain I could bring myself to shoot someone coming through my door.
