Apple Watch Powers a $29 Billion Wearables Market by 2022

Say what you will about Apple Watch—and pundits have said plenty—but it is considered a major force behind an estimated $29 billion wearables market by 2022.

Market researcher CCS Insight predicts 71 million smartwatches will be sold this year, doubling to 140 million by 2022—helping to fuel $29 billion in wearable sales by 2022.

Apple Watches are leading the way, with shipments of 16 million units this year, up 60% from 2017. CCS estimates a quarter of Apple's (AAPL) sales in the fourth quarter came from Apple Watch.

"Apple [PC1] has become the market leader for smartwatches," says George Jijiashvili, senior analyst for wearables at CCS Insight. "Sales volumes have exceeded expectations, and the introduction of a cellular-enabled model has pushed up the value of its sales, which we estimate at $5 billion in 2017."

CCS expects Apple this year to match the worldwide sales of all Swiss-made watches. Last year, Swiss watches sold 24 million units.

While Apple Watch is gaining strength, Alphabet's (GOOGL) Android Wear smartwatches are scuffling, CCS says. They sold about 5 million units in 2017, with projected shipments of 6 million in 2018.
