Most live performances suck
We are at opposite ends of the spectrum regarding this. I love live performances, including local bar cover bands, local concerts in the park and major rock acts.

Some live concert recordings do suck, especially bootleg recordings, like many Grateful Dead bootleg recordings.

Many things are required to make a good live recording, such as a good producer, sound board and method of recording. Recording directly from the sound board and then mixed and edited later usually make the best live recordings.

Some excellent live recordings include:
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - 'Live Bullet'
The Band - 'The Last Waltz'
Nirvana - 'MTV Unplugged in New York'
Little Feat - 'Waiting for Columbus'
Deep Purple - 'Made In Japan'
Kiss - 'Alive!'
The Rolling Stones - 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!'
Peter Frampton - 'Frampton Comes Alive!'
The Allman Brothers - 'Live at the Filmore East'
The Who - 'Live at Leeds'
