As well as any long gun. An AR15 fires .223 ammo, which is the essentially the same diameter as a .22. It has more punch than a .22 long rifle or even a .22 hornet as it has more powder behind it. An AR15 is LESS powerful than all popular deer and other big game cartridges, which you can also buy either semi-auto or lever action. Take a look at this: See where the .223 is? It's recommended for things like coyotes. Look at all those more powerful hunting calibers. See those? More power and longer range than an AR15. The bottom two are semi-auto rifles just like the AR15. Why does the military use .223 ammo instead of more powerful cartridges they used in the world wars? Because .223 rifles and ammo are lighter weight. More shots per pound that a soldier has to carry.
