BTW how did the 30-06 caliber get so popular in the US as a deer cartridge? I think it's because the Army used those cartridges in WWI and WWII. Humans and deer are about the same size and weights.

Rifles[ edit] M1903 Springfield (.30-'06) M1 Garand (.30-'06) M1917 Enfield rifle (.30-'06) M1941 Johnson rifle (.30-'06) M1 and M1A1 carbinehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_weapons_of_the_United_States

Why are .223 popular now? Because in the 60's the Army gave up power and range for weight.

All the 30-06 deer rifles are civilian variants of WWI and WWII Army rifles. .308's are variants of the M14. And AR15's are semi-auto variants of the M16.
