Going to sleep is best, Mike. Had any major surgeries before? Trust me ~ sleep is best. Waking up sucks, but it sounds and smells better. BTW, I'm no expert on back surgery and I've also read what Janice said, (somewhere!), but I gotta tell you I've had some good results with various surgeries. I tend to worry about these things, because I'm a bona fide registered vortex of "goes wrong", but I've been definitely better off after all my surgeries, 'cept that one where I was awake and nearly bled to death. (They jamb your feet in the air, the whole table, til the surgeon practically has to kneel to work on you, the number of people triples, and some nurse is yelling "STAY WITH US, PAUL!" They're wrestling you around like a tuna, fumble-fingers Felton hands off the soldering iron to one of the younger surgeons looking on concernedly over his shoulder; what was dry is wet and hydro-planing squishy/slippery and all the cotton booties are tracking red out the swinging doors where people are running to get more.) Wait ~ where was I.

Honestly, surgery is a modern miracle. Be a little nervous but be fine.
