> hydrocarbon n. any of a class of compounds of hydrogen and carbon that are found in oil, coal, and natural gas. Please reread my post. I said that methane is often, but not always, associated with coal. Remember the classic picture of taking the canary into a coal mine? The bird supposedly died before too much harm was done to the miners. This is also the reason for mine explosions before proper ventilation was introduced. Coal in and of itself is not a hydrocarbon. Probably picking nits here. Mike P.S. Bob, how do you do boldface type in SI? Thanks.
