It is worth remembering that the new capacity coming online to produce flexible rather than rigid OLED displays was not designed to compete with LCD's for today's phone designs. Flexible OLED production lines are designed to enable tomorrows foldable and rollable devices.

The transition will take time though. I'm not expecting much in the way of sales from Samsung's Gen 1 foldable smartphone. My baseline expectation is that they get the hardware right but I expect that the software will take some time. The key is to see a positive custome reaction and for prices to come down enough to allow a Galaxy Note or S foldable handset. If everything goes right, maybe we get that in late 2019? 2020 is more likely though.

It will be a while before the Chinese vendors can follow Samsung's footsteps. They are going to push down prices regardless of what Samsung decides over the next 18 months.
