Lighting your house or your street is a deterrent.....thieves hide in the bushes in the darkness.... Our electric company used to run a campaign with the slogan "light a light, stop a thieve".......now with LEDs, I keep two outside lights on all night for a cost of about 1.50/year...... I also have a flood light on a motion detector in the back of my house so I have light when I go back to the garbage can.....it is usually set off by the deer.....
We live about 3 miles from a prison and many years ago a guy escaped and headed in our direction...we had cops all over the place including camping in my back yard.....I kept a spot light on all night and so did many of the neighbors.

As you know NY has a lot of Mafia types in the area......a friend of mine has one as a near neighbor and he tells me the guy always has lights on has no shrubbery around his house..... I think it funny that my next door neighbor is a big NRA guy who is paranoid but is too cheap to light any lights around his house....I'm going to offer to pay the 1.50 for him.. We have street lights but only about half of the neighbors light a light.. It varies by neighbor hood but some are 100% lighted.
