Gaps are a broadly discussed topic that I don't give much creedence to as far as wise investing. However, I do have opinions based on a few situations I've seen. In quality stocks, that is a company with good long-term prospects in positive earnings growth, gaps tend to be filled within 6 - 12 months. The gap was most likely caused by a one time bad news earnings report that no one had expected. As a result, short term traders and those that don't understand the long term growth of the company sell in over night trading and at the open. With little buying occuring the price can gap down heavily before buyers happily come in to purchase at bargain basement prices. Then as new buyers begin to purchase the stock it begins trending back up. Wall Street seems to have a short memory when it comes to bad news in a quality company.

Beware of gaps that occur in a company that has gone negative on the long term it most likely will continue to go down. I believe ATT is currently a good example of this situation.

Hope this helps, Craig.
