The term "assault rifle", goes back even further, to WWII to refer to an automatic rifle. Technically the German term mean "Storm Rifle" in literal translation but the non-literal translation normally used was assault rifle. But that refered to fully automatic rifles.

For assault rifle you have a consistent definition that goes back noticeably longer than I've been alive. "Assault weapon" isn't so well or consistently defined. But typically uses characteristics like a pistol grips, flash suppressors, barrel shrouds, bayonet lugs, folding or telescoping butts etc. Witch don't really matter much. Or just lists specific weapons by name (which can have a legal impact but isn't really a definition).
