His "president for life" thing was a joke. Mostly. He said it to a group of Republican donors who are obviously friendly to him. Here is the CNN report on it, with an excerpt:

He was also making jokes at the Gridiron Dinner (different talk, same day) about things like who would leave him earlier, Stephen Miller or Melania. IMO, many of these jokes are especially funny because they contain half truths or at least recognition that people talk about those things.

However, we should not stoop to the level of the Rs who frantically claimed that Obama was going to try to become a president for life. It is idiotic.
