SALE OF EMD PLANT COMPLETED

BHP today announced that it had concluded the sale of its
Newcastle based Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide Plant, operated
by Australian Manganese Company Ltd (AMCL) to Delta Electrical
Industries Ltd, a South African listed company. Delta will
assume control of the plant on 30 January 1998. The effective
purchase price was $57 million as announced on 26 June.

Delta has indicated it will make investments in the plant in the
medium term to improve operations. Delta has offered ongoing
employment to all existing AMCL employees.

Mr G P (Graeme) Hunt, Group General Manager BHP Manganese, said
the smooth transition was mutually beneficial for everyone
involved. "BHP is focusing its manganese business more tightly on
its core mining and smelting activities, Delta is making a
significant growth step and employees have peace of mind and an
opportunity to help AMCL grow," he said.

The AMCL plant produces approximately 23,000 tonnes of high
quality EMD annually for export to alkaline dry cell battery
producers.

BHP will continue to supply manganese ore to the plant under a
long term contract arrangement.
