Very few make it into civilian life upon retirement, there are strict rules and tests to be passed...... For a good movie on the subject see "Meagan Leavey" a true story of a Marine dog and his trainer and what she had to do to get him released to her care after he retired.... So, in effect, the dogs are banned for civilians..
