This velocity surpasses a previous record of 384 messages per second. At 9:30 a.m. today, all Nasdaq issues opened on time, and by 10:30 a.m., Nasdaq(R) issues had traded over 180 million shares. The system that handles this process was recently upgraded to a Unisys IX4800 eight processor system that went on-line on December 15, 1997. "We are very pleased that our systems continue to handle immense traffic without a problem. Nasdaq opened all of its stocks on time," said Alfred Berkeley, President of The Nasdaq Stock Market.
