WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 12, 1998--Nasdaq Stock Market(SM) computers handled a record 408 messages per second at the market open today. This velocity surpasses a previous record of 384 messages per second. At 9:30 a.m. today, all Nasdaq issues opened on time, and by 10:30 a.m., Nasdaq(R) issues had traded over 180 million shares. The system that handles this process was recently upgraded to a Unisys IX4800 eight processor system that went on-line on December 15, 1997. "We are very pleased that our systems continue to handle immense traffic without a problem. Nasdaq opened all of its stocks on time," said Alfred Berkeley, President of The Nasdaq Stock Market. The Nasdaq Stock Market is the fastest growing major stock market in the world, and the first electronic-based market ever created. More than half of all the shares traded in the United States every day do so on Nasdaq.
