3/16/2018 Contest update
Arcadia, the mythical pastoral paradise has inspired many a poet and painter. It has now also inspired investors to dream of infinite fields of high fiber wheat. I’m referring, of course, to Arcadia Biosciences and the wild ride its stock took this week. From last week’s close of $10.40 it managed to get as high as $66.56 before running out of rocket fuel, closing the week at $41.91.
Despite the sell-off from its high, RKDA’s gain for the week was more than enough to propel AKOFNY’s portfolio, the lone Contest holder of RKDA with a 20% allocation, into first place with a substantial lead. But there are over 9 months to go in the Contest, so it would be prudent for AKOFNY to hold off gloatin’ over gluten.
Meanwhile, biotechs had an off week and at Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 15.54% YTD (vs. up 17.35% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 5.58% YTD (vs. up 7.15% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 10.28% YTD (vs. up 13.78% YTD a week ago), with the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) up 8.38% YTD (vs. up 9.52% YTD a week ago).
As noted above, AKOFNY’s portfolio is our new Contest leader, being pumped by RKDA’s huge 303% gain for the week to a spectacular 122.26% YTD gain. SPTAD’s portfolio, up 42.91% YTD, moved into second place and RKRW’s portfolio, up 39.71% YTD, dropped to third place.
At Friday's close, 60 of the 62 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 54 continuing to beat the NBI and an impressive 47 now beating the SPSIBI.
The 230 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 16.13% and median YTD gain of 5.20%, with 135 showing a gain for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Have a safe & fun St. Paddy’s Day weekend biotechies! And may your portfolios forever be green!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
