Quora comment on police and armed citizens:

Will Katz, Freelance Academic Tutor (2011-present)

My friend’s brother is a cop.

I met him at a party, and over a couple of beers, I asked him, “hey, how do you feel about civilian firearm ownership?”

“I totally support it,” he quickly replied.

I looked at him. “Why?”

He turned, and his face took on a stern expression.

“Let me tell you something. When we receive a call to someone’s house, that there’s a break-in, or that a neighbor heard screams, or gunshots… by the time we get there, it’s usually already over.”

I blinked at him. “Seriously? You never catch the criminals in progress?”

“Oh sure, we sometimes do. But it’s the exception to the rule. Most of the time, well… it’s fucking depressing.”

This is just an anecdote, but I think his views fairly well summarize how cops feel as a whole. In a survey of 20,000 Sheriffs and Chiefs of police,

86.4% of the US’s Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs “support nationwide recognition of state issued concealed weapon permits.”

76% of those same heads of departments believe that “qualified, law-abiding armed citizens help law enforcement reduce violent criminal activity.”

Many in law enforcement hate seeing innocent people victimized, and view armed, responsible citizens as allies in the fight to maintain a peaceful, orderly society.
