Cisco plugs the middle with new Gigabit Switch Router By Scott Berinato January 12, 1998 PC Week
Cisco Systems Inc. today added a Gigabit Switch Router to its Cisco 12000 family that fits snugly between GSRs already available.
The Cisco 12008 GSR operates on OC-3 (155M bps), OC-12 (622M bps) and, eventually, OC-48 (2.4G bps) backbone links. Designed for both enterprise customers and Internet service providers transitioning to gigabit networks, the 12008 includes Packet Over Synchronous Optical Network and ATM connections, according to Cisco officials, in San Jose, Calif.
The 12008, with a 10G- to 40G-bps aggregate switching capacity, fits between Cisco's 12004, with 5G-bps switching capacity, and the higher-end 12012, which can handle 15G to 60G bps, officials said.
Available now, the Cisco 12008 GSR will start at $19,900. No date was given for the availability of OC-48 links.
