Think about this:

what would be one predictable result?

I see it in Hawaii all the time. Younger(or even older) folks go to work for cash. Then simply sign up for the State paid Quest health program. Pay no taxes, get food stamps, free medical(remember that ACA is paid in after tax dollars making the true cost much higher).

The studies in Hawaii have indicated a wages of about $50,000/year is needed to equal welfare benefits received by a single parent with 2 kids. I think that is probably low. I haven't see recent studies but in just State housing assistance a 3 person family would benefit $24,000/year in post tax dollars. Starting rent where I live is 2k/mo for a 2B/1B apt. With welfare and unemployed it is free. The full time working Mom of 2 kids would easily have to earn $35,000 just to pay rent(no utilities) in Hawaii.

Here's a counter to a CATO study and the comments are helpful.

Note comments about child care. It runs $800 month in Hawaii if you can find it. Often means driving way out of your way in heavy traffic for drop off and pick up.

The high cost of living is literally forcing families of ALL backgrounds to game the system and work cash jobs on the side.

As a business owner, I had to hire my wife on salary through a leasing company just to be able to reasonably afford her ACA with Kaiser. The savings on the ACA cost made it cheaper than if she paid on her own as an individual even though I hired her at 2k a month. The ACA cost just for her(56 yrs old) exceeded the $2,000 cost to the leasing company and she actually gets some bucks in her pocket every month.

The difference is that she does some of the work that takes up too much of my time(running out to do crap to keep the company running) and the fact that the leasing company can buy ACA in bulk and that alone accounts for a couple thousand a month in cost.

It's a crazy system.
