Yes, the attraction for authoritarianism can happen at any age. I'm not being ageist but there is definitely a proclivity for older, low education and/or low curiosity people to gravitate toward that locus. Their kids aren't necessarily free from that, but they are becoming more urban. The old are staying rural until their situation demands changes.

I'd mentioned that my mother was very unhappy with the politics and spiritual options in her upscale senior community. She had to avoid political or spiritual thoughts with others. She had Buddhas in her yard. People would ask if she was Buddhist and she'd deny it. "Oh, I just like the way they looked." she'd say. I'd encouraged her to seek out other Buddhists in the community but she would wave labels like "hippy" around and not go. I told her that she would find them better companions than retired executives and wealthy homemakers who liked the Dumpfster®. Very normal people are Buddhists I assured her.

When she passed my brother was telling everyone she was Christian. I had to tell the Catholic Hospital Chaplain that wasn't REALLY true. She attended church for community but specifically told me that she felt like a hypocrite because she didn't believe the dogma and explicitly didn't want a religious memorial. I'm glad that I could provide a regular conversational outlet and acceptance that other family members and her peer group couldn't.
