I agree as far as the collapse of Rom goes and absence of a central authority. It was the Germanic tribes that finished off Rome in about 450 AD. And it was the lack of a central authority whereby the church assumed power as the only authority around.

But I was not talking about the collapse of Rome, I was talking about how the church ruled when it had so much power and especially the period between 500 and 1,000 AD (official Dark ages), but the church had great power for most of the last two millennia.

So during that time when the church had almost total power was the WORST time to live in the last 2,000 years. So why would we think they are the moral imperative? Why would they think they can do better than today's modern civilization.

Remember, Darwin waited 20 years to release his origin of Species for fear of the church and that was the mid 1850's. During MOST of the last 2,000 years people were tortured for Heresy or speaking against the powers that were. And scientists lived in fear for their lives most of that time and women who thought were burned as witches.

It was education and freedom from the church that ushered in modern civilization free from slavery, institutional segregation and general civil rights and democracy.

Koan,
What do you think caused it?
Collapse of the Roman Empire with no other governing authority to replace it for centuries.

Now I'll wait while you claim that Christianity caused the Roman Empire to collapse.

Not the barbarian raids, not the collapse of the slave economy, not overexpansion, not corruption, not the Eastern empires, just Constantine and his conversion to Christianity.
