You and I both know what political uncertainty can do to a stock. We were both long MO in 1997 when Clinton and Congress went after Big MO with a vengeance. The stock had very strong earnings, a 7% dividend and was trading with a PE of 9, but kept falling in spite of being a massive Cash cow. And now Trump is creating the same political uncertainty with his tariffs and trade talk against China. One of the lessons I learned from the MO experience was don't underestimate what investors and traders will do in the face of political uncertainty. It was easy to hold on to MO back then because I had a 7% dividend which was secure. Last I looked there wasn't a dividend anywhere near that level except in some REITs and a few other stocks. Also, Trump is feeling the heat from the Mueller investigation. Lots of political uncertainty there. Markets can rally strongly if/when the China situation is resolved. Bull may resume in that situation if earnings growth is strong enough.
