3/23/2018 Contest update
The week saw more than a little collateral damage on Wall Street from the looming Trump trade war with China. Meanwhile, with the arrival of spring, pennies from heaven rained down on the Biotech Contest canton. Notably, the week’s top two portfolio gainers (ATE.V & BTI.V) were penny stocks. But, of course, there were bad pennies as well, with two of the worst five portfolio losers being penny stocks.
For your enjoyment, here’s Billie Holiday’s version of “Pennies from Heaven”:

Friday’s closing numbers were indeed numbing. The Contest median was up 10.99% YTD (vs. up 15.54% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was now actually down -1.39% YTD (vs. up 5.58% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 4.35% YTD (vs. up 10.28% YTD a week ago), with the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) up 1.29% YTD (vs. up 8.38% YTD a week ago).
AKOFNY’s portfolio, up 75.02% YTD, remained in first place but with a much reduced lead. RKRW’s portfolio, up 37.71% YTD, moved up to second place and SPTAD’s portfolio, up 37.43% YTD, was a smidgen behind in third place.
At Friday's close, 54 of the 62 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 60 beating the NBI and 49 beating the SPSIBI.
The 230 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 10.68% and median YTD gain of just 0.53%, with 116 showing a gain for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy the first spring weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
