MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1998--

The Shark 250 PC Card Receives BEST OF 1997 Awards for Offering Unlimited
Hard-Disk Expansion for Mobile Professionals

Avatar Peripherals, Inc., today announced that its Shark 250 mobile hard drive with
mini-removable media was dually awarded Best Portable Storage Product of 1997 from Mobile
Computing & Communications and Imaging Magazine. The publications praised Avatar for
designing a sleek, cool-looking removable storage device that offers a universal drive interface
(UDI), the ultimate delivery mechanism offering a safety net for data protection for any notebook
or desktop computer.

Mobile Computing & Communications honored Avatar with its highest accolade for Best Portable
Storage Product of 1997 in its January 1998 issue for "...creating a terrific portable solution for
mobile professionals." The Shark 250 was also praised by the editorial staff for being "...slim
enough to fit inside almost any notebook carrying case and light enough not to be noticed."

Imaging Magazine awarded Avatar's Shark 250 the Best of 1997 acclaim in its January 1998
issue. Editor Joni Bletcher praised Avatar for creating an unlimited, high-performance portable
storage solution for laptop and desktop computers.

"The awards that the Shark 250 has won since its launch nine months ago verify to us that small,
light, and portable as well as high-performance, high-capacity removable storage are critical to our
customers," said George Skaff, president and chief executive officer of Avatar Peripherals. "Avatar
is extremely gratified to be recognized as the emerging industry leader in the portable storage
market for mobile users. This recognition is proof-positive that Avatar's products are the portable
storage solutions for today and tomorrow."

Avatar Peripherals' Shark 250, available in a Parallel Port or PC Card interface, is a feature-rich,
compact, and light-weight portable hard disk drive that caters to the mobile users looking to
maximize their investment for their notebook and desktop computers. Weighing a mere 9.7
ounces, the Shark 250 packs a lot of hardware punch, making it the ideal solution for notebook
users to add unlimited storage expansion to their hard disk drive. With its high-capacity storage of
250MBs, the Shark 250 HARDiskette media is 2.5 times the capacity of Iomega's Zip drive. In
addition, the Shark 250 uses technology that's four times faster, a form factor that's one-third
smaller, and is one-third the weight of the Zip drive. Unlike the Zip drive, the Shark 250 connects
to the computer with a single cable for both power and data, without requiring an external power
supply. . .

Anybody know how many of these things they're selling. I've examined a display model and they look pretty cool. I've got to admit, if it weren't for the compatability issue (I've already got a Zip in my desktop), I'd want one of these for my laptop. . . As the article points out, the technology and the convenience of use I think make it superior to the laptop Zip.
