| | | I remember talking with an HR rep on the Olympic Peninsula years ago. He had the hardest time keeping buss drivers (high turnover rate), so he changed the qualification test from I.Q. to focus on whether the applicant was service oriented and able to adjust to challenging circumstances with the public.
What he found was high IQ folks, on average, were just taking the job as a temporary solution as they looked for something better. On average they were not able to deal with difficult riders or be patient. Bottom line, he was able to drop the turnover rate 30-40% in 3 years based on changing the hiring requirement from intelligence, to other metrics more in line with the job requirement. Sounds like a no-brainer today, but 15 - 20 years ago it was an eye opener and saved the company a lot of money.
The problem is the low IQ service oriented hard worker in America today, is competing with a flood of illegal immigrates, so jobs are tough to find, and wages are constantly under downward pressure. A good example is your typical Uber driver in a major metropolitan city. Since illegals can get drivers licenses, and Uber doesn't require proof of citizenship to drive, they jump into the occupation, lowering pressure on Uber to raise rates and keeping wages to drivers at the low end.
Of course, we the Joe-Q public benefit with cheap rides, but do we really benefit long term as those families struggle to get by, raise kids and are more likely to break up as a result? It's a tough thing to model. |
