I agree with you about the Greeks search for enlightenment and a moral way of living, but let's not forget that during the time of the Greeks, they engaged in patronage, which involved pedophilia. The Greek philosophy found some higher ground, but failed utterly in others. Every philosophy and religion since then has had the same mix of good and bad. You know why? Because humans ourselves are good and bad. It's like the heads and tails on a coin. You can't have one without the other. Eventually, some will make it to heaven and they may find out what pure good is like, but here on earth, there is no such thing.

You may remember this from college. In Sociology 101, they teach you about the important role that religion has played in the fabric of societies. Laws alone were never enough to keep people restrained. Religion played the role of both explaining the unexplainable in our universe, but also created rules to live by and strong enough taboos that allowed for the proper functioning of society. In the modern age, where governments simply can't monitor and control people sufficiently enough, those taboos are more important than ever. Unfortunately, those taboos have largely disappeared, replaced by a secularism whose focus is on wealth acquisition and celebrity above all else. It's a very warped culture we have now.

The liberals have brought some great things to our culture, not the least of which is tolerance of the margins of our society, equality for minorities and women, and a focus on the 99%. However, liberals can also be blind when it comes to things like the embrace of Islam, which itself is a very intolerant religion, which treats women like cattle and is used to justify some of the biggest horrors we have seen around the world. In addition, liberals are taking things too far when I hear so many of my liberal friends talk about how the "white man is to blame for all that is wrong in the world". That is pure racism, not to mention an alienation of a group of people whom the liberals need on their side to make faster progress.

I think the truly enlightened would refused to align themselves with either of our corrupt parties. Only the unaligned can see the failure of both parties to truly represent the people the way we need to be represented. Our children who marched in Washington these past few days seem to understand that neither party is really fixing anything. Too bad the adults can't figure this out.
