Well, a press release from FSCX--it's been a while, wasn't sure if they remembered how to do one.
FASTCOMM ANNOUNCES VirtualPORT EXPANSION TECHNOLOGY New Port Expansion Mechanism Enables Nine to Over 100 Port Configuration for Host Site Legacy Applications using Standard, Cost-Effective FastComm Modular Products STERLING, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1998-- FastComm Communications Corp. today announced a new technology for legacy port expansion using high speed LAN connections. The exclusive FastComm VirtualPORT(TM) technology allows FastComm FRADs to be expanded over existing or new LAN connections, allowing large legacy host site solutions for SNA, Bisync, Burroughs, Bitsync, and Async--any legacy protocol in the company's LAN+Legacy(TM) suite.
Applied initially to port expansion, the new technology is media independent. In the first release from FastComm, from nine to over 100 port expanded configurations over Ethernet are supported. This expansion mechanism allows easily managed growth, as needs arise, as additional ports are connected over the LAN in a non-disruptive fashion. Expansion units may be linked to each other directly, through an Ethernet hub, or for high bandwidth configurations, via an Ethernet switch. Cost to expand is contained and linear, as compared to other expansion methods which typically involve multiple hardware components.
Completely compatible with all other LAN traffic, this exclusive mechanism is the optimal way to provide port expansion at local or remote sites, using multi-port FastComm EtherFRAD(TM) devices as a standard building block. When used at remote sites, the new mechanism can easily be used to support configurations requiring more than four serial ports. The mechanism allows an entire Intranet to be built with a standard component--which can be deployed at any site--reducing the cost to acquire, deploy, and maintain the network. The release with the new technology is available 1Q98, at no additional charge, to all FastComm F9200 series customers using the company's LAN+Legacy(TM) suite of protocols.
''I'm very pleased to make this announcement,'' stated Peter Madsen, FastComm President. ''VirtualPORT(TM) technology gives our customers the benefit of immediate WAN and equipment cost savings in their large and growing networks.''
With industry-leading LAN+Legacy(TM) application support, advanced features such as MaximumPRIORITY(TM) multi-stream prioritization, FastRATE(TM) adaptive congestion and CIR bandwidth control, FramePROTECT(TM) data protection for mission critical SNA applications, and optional integral DDS/DDS2, IDSL, HDSL and T1/E1 DSU/CSUs, plus on-board ISDN BRI interfaces for dial-networking and dial-backup, the Data, Voice and Video capable FastComm products are the best value available to customers today.
''FastComm products are a viable alternative for connecting remote and branch offices to the corporate network or Intranet today,'' stated Fred McClimans, CEO and Research Director of CurrentAnalysis. ''This new method of port expansion will allow FastComm to target new market segments, and allow customers to easily apply FastComm products to larger configurations--at reasonable costs.''
