Trump's America: Fourth Quarter GDP Beats Expectations

The economy grew at a faster pace in the fourth quarter than previously forecast, nearing the 3 percent growth target President Donald Trump's administration has long touted.

According to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Commerce, gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annualized rate of 2.9 percent, up from the estimated 2.7 percent, Bloomberg Markets reported.

Additionally, consumer spending — the biggest chunk of the U.S. economy — grew at a rate of 4 percent, a slight improvement on the latest 3.8 percent estimate.

The GDP growth in the last three months of 2017 was a slight moderation, CNBC reported, from the third quarter's 3.2 percent pace. But overall, the economy expanded 2.3 percent in 2017 — a positive increase from the 1.5 percent growth recorded in 2016.

On Monday, Trump tweeted about the economic success:

The economy is looking really good. It has been many years that we have seen these kind of numbers. The underlying strength of companies has perhaps never been better.

Corporate profits also rose by a 1.7 percent rate in the fourth quarter after increasing at a 5.7 percent rate in the third quarter.

Economists are optimistic the economy will reach the president's 3 percent annual growth goal this year, pointing to the White House's $1.5 trillion income tax cut package and a forecasted increase in federal spending.
