Fathers would help. Being trained on the proper care, security, and use of guns would also help. I grew up with all those things and have a family that are big gun supporters, especially since half my family has served in the military and most of us grew up in Texas where most people believe in our gun rights. Therefore, I'm big supporter of the 2nd Amendment. As to improvement of our laws, there are plenty things we can do that would make this country safer for our children without impacting any of us who are responsible gun owners: * raise the age limit to 21 and over, just like alcohol * ensure national standards on training on proper care, security, and use of guns; mandatory registration of annual minimum training hours required (suggest 5 hours minimum, including 1 hour retraining on security)...training precedes granting of license to own gun; purchase of gun can only be granted upon presentation of valid license to own gun * if you have a felony, no gun for you forevermore * if you have a mental health issue, no gun for you until a Psychiatrist clears you as cured * a national database registry of all guns, owners, date of purchased, license #, ownership transfers * if gun is lost or stolen, owner has 90 days to file with authorities or they are prohibited from buying another gun until they do so. When people buy a new gun, they have to certify they are in position of previously purchased guns. If owner has 3 or more guns lost or stolen, then they must turn in all guns they own and they are banned from owning guns forevermore * if you are found in possession of a gun registered lost or stolen, then you are prosecuted with a felony and are banned from owning guns forevermore * illegal to own a machine gun or assault weapon * complete ban on rapid fire mechanisms faster than the natural rate capable from a human finger pressing the trigger, including bump stocks or anything created in the future to increase the rate of fire * if you are a non-citizen visiting this country, you are banned from carrying guns and will immediately lose any legal status you have and be deported if found in violation
That's just what I can think of on short notice. There's probably a lot more we can do besides this. |
