Ah, so YOU think 7 yo's dressing as the opposite sex is natural too.
I did some weird things as a kid. Made some interesting choices in "fashion" that turned out to be outlandish. (I never dressed like a lady, though.)

Sara Gilbert, who plays that kid's mother on the show (and is also an executive producer), said that the character doesn't see himself as gay or trans, and that there will be an episode that focuses on why he does that:
