You really think a merger is necessary for LRCX and NVLS to survive? They each have some pretty impressive technology to challenge AMAT but I am not certain a merger would help their cause. Although this idea is frequently bantered about it is my own opinion that if we were to have seen a merger, it would have happened by now. We have already begun the recovery and spending development of 300mm equipment has begun in earnest. Wouldn't this be a large reason to merge? At this point, any cost benefits would be mitigated to a large degree since each has their own 300mm program already in full swing. I just don't see a merger having much effect right now. Would appreciate any counterpoints you can offer.
