A more provocative way to phrase that question would be with an example: If the mother (say a good Catholic) was opposed to gene medicine and knew she was carrying a defect-bearing child, should she have the right to carry it to term (especially if she can't afford to give the infant the specialized support anticipated)? There will be a lively debate about reproductive rights and the economic burdens they invoke. Who has the final say?
