RE: quiet period
Many companies have a "quiet" period between about 3-4 weeks before their report date (or sometimes 2-4 weeks before the end of the quarter) until the report date, during which they cannot/will not comment on the quarter. This is primarily to protect them from being pestered by analysts and investors alike about "how the quarter went" and to try to forestall any possible lawsuits. It is one result of all of the wonderful[sic] class action suits that have been filed over the past decade.
