Yes in the past governments were smaller and the peoples misery was much greater.

Just compare the US ,to how people lived in 1918 without unemployment, benefits, food stamps, social security and medicare and modern laws and social programs.

It was bleak indeed. And that goes for most of the world.

Now look at the most successful countries in the world.

You need to read some history dude!!

Its not just "plenty of examples". Every single country in the world that's been around for a long time is an example, or at least almost every one, I can't think of any exceptions at the moment but its possible they exist,
