Its obvious to anyone who knows any significant amount about the history of government spending and taxation.

For most the the history of the US, of any country in Europe that's been around anywhere close to as long as the US, for most of the history of Japan, for most of the history of China... taxes have represented a smaller, in most cases much smaller, percentage of the economy.

Of course part of the reason for that was that the economies couldn't have supported such intensive taxation as we have today, they just didn't have the surplus to carry government that was so big.

Was civilization something that came in to being during the Great Depression or WWII?
