All well and good BUT this is my experience with the Atkins diet my husband and I have been on since Jan. We originally went on the diet because he was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. He's skinny as a rail, but his favorite foods..............Italian breads and desserts.............. put him in this state, so it was time for a change.

His doctor did not recommend this diet........in fact he recommended just the opposite, but I didn't know that until last night. ng

I went on this diet with him, and just for the heck of it, and out of curiosity I decided to go in for a fasting blood draw yesterday. I am showing a back to back result of my blood draw from yesterday in comparison to the results of the blood draw taken last August during my annual physical.

Aug 2017 results:

TC - 203
HDL - 58
TRG - 94
LDL - 127
non-HDL - 145
LDL/HDL - 2.2

Primary HbA1C - 5.9%

April 2018 results:

TC - 258
HDL - 80
TRG - 105
LDL - 157
non-HDL - 178
LDL/HDL - 1.9

Primary HbA1C - 5.5%

I'm in the process of deciphering these numbers and I admit I am unfamiliar with some of these terms, ratios and goals. My biggest concerns are the TC, LDL and non-HDL #s. I think my concerns are more psychological than not, but I'd appreciate any suggestions from people here who have much more experience in tracking their health stats and are therefore much better informed.

At this stage, I have decided to go off the Atkins diet just because those stats mentioned above scare me. But I do wonder................am I being too cautious and giving up too soon, or should I go in a different direction and maybe do my research on diabetic web sites and with cook books that are geared towards diabetics? Both of our Mothers developed Type 2 diabetes in their later years, and we're both determined to avoid their fate.

BTW I've lost 7 lbs so far on this diet, so the weight loss is a very desirable outcome. I also happen to absolutely LOVE this diet. It is fulfilling in so many ways. We try to walk 3 miles every day, but living in the rainy PNW, that isn't always possible.

Suggestions are welcomed!
