Once a red blood cell becomes glycated, it remains glycated until the cell dies. This is why the A1C test can indicate elevated blood glucose within the previous 90 days, the lifespan of a red blood cell.
This explains why my buddy's doctor didn't schedule a follow up appointment till 3 months after the diabetes diagnosis to see how the meds were working.
